DevLog 3 - jess
My vision for the final project is a short, wild-west horror experience. Ideally, the game will invoke fear in the players, while also making them want to replay the game after they have finished.
In the game, the player will have to collect a number of objects in order to escape the area. However, a monster will be chasing them, to try and stop them from escaping. The monster will spawn at random near the player after a certain amount of time has passed. If the player looks at the monster for too long, the monster kills the player, ending the game. To win, the player must collect each item from around the map.
In order to create replayability in the game, randomisation is absolutely key. The collectable items will spawn in different locations in each playthrough. Additionally, the monster will also spawn in a random location near the player.
To make the game scarier and more challenging as it goes on, the amount of time between monster spawns will decrease with each object collected. So during the search for the final collectable, the monster will spawn extremely frequently.
This week, I took on the responsibility of coding the core game mechanics. So far, the player can walk, jump, pick up items, and use a flashlight. I am currently working on the mechanics for the monster spawning and jumpscares, and hopefully they won’t take too much longer to figure out.
I would like to continue with the coding in this project, as I usually take on more artistic roles in group projects, and I want to further improve my coding skills.
